"She's not fat, she's fluffy."
In Sophie's case (a new patient at the Royal Treatment Veterinary Center), she is most certainly fluffy (and all sorts of adorable). However, this isn't always the case for a lot of companion animals. With over half of the pets in the United States overweight, it's becoming more and more difficult for us to discern between fat and "fluffy". You can ensure your pet maintains a healthy weight by: 1. Feeding less than it says on the can or package! If you're already doing that--feed even less!* 2. Reducing carbohydrates 3. Exercising (and when you aren't, feed less!) 4. Remember that food does not equal love. Think of every treat you give your pet as if it were a candy bar. If you ate candy bars all day, how big would you be? 5. Paying attention to poop! Adult dogs be pooping 1-2 times per day. If they are going more than this, you may need to feed less food. 6. "A dog should have a defined edge to the rib cage, a waist, and hips. You should be able to feel the ribs without applying too much pressure on the chest." -Dr. Barbara Royal 7. Ruling out any hormonal imbalance or adrenal dysfunction. These illnesses can make losing weight hard. If you're doing everything right and your pet is still...fluffy...consult with your vet to make sure there isn't an underlying cause. *Remember that weight loss for our feline friends should always be done slowly and carefully. They are at a much greater risk for developing other illnesses (like hepatic lipidosis) if we try to get them to lose weight too quickly. Discuss how to best reduce food with your veterinarian. We here at RAHU love fluffy pets, but we love HEALTHY pets even more! CAT TREES

While we don't have an absolute answer for why animals that are carnivores would eat grass, it does make sense. Carnivores in the wild would eat the tummies of their prey, (which would contain grasses and vegetable matter) so their gastrointestinal (GI) tract would expect some amount of greens. Live grasses contains healthy fibers that can help the GI tract maintain a healthy biome and motility. They also contain vitamins, phytonutrients, chlorophyll, folate, and antioxidants that can help the body's immune system fight cancer and decrease inflammation. Grasses can help dogs and cats avoid hairballs from hair that they eat, help them manage GI parasites, and help rid them of some GI irritants. Animals who eat grass to the point of vomiting are either reacting to some illness or toxin, are trying to get it out of their system, have a nutritional imbalance, a need for more fresh protein (thick-bladed grasses smell like protein after a rain), or some hyperacidity that they are trying to manage. Too much vomiting is not healthy so it's best to look at the nutrition, fiber content of the food and freshness of the food to try to stop the behavior. Some people try adding fresh greens that they get at the grocery store or some fiber like ground psyllium to the diet. Sometimes even well fed animals will eat some grass because it is a natural behavior. Be careful not to let pets eat any toxic houseplants or any grasses that have any pesticide or herbicide on them as those can be toxic to pets – – even after they have dried. With these tips, we hope you and your little carnivore can have a safe and happy holiday this year! Watch Dr. Arielle Herndobler's lecture in our "What's In Your Emergency Kit?" -For as long as I can remember I have loved animals and knew I wanted to be a veterinarian. I even attended high school at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences which is the only farm in the city of Chicago. I took the animal science pathway and had the opportunity to work with farm animals in the city! When did you begin learning about integrative medicine? -Integrative medicine has always been a part of my life. When I was growing up, my mom always worked at addressing the underlying cause of our illnesses. For example, when I got strep throat repeatedly she reached for supplements and started juicing to help boost my immune system. I started taking additional coursework for acupuncture and herbs the first year after I graduated veterinary school. Early on in my career I recognized the limitations of western medicine and aspired to add holistic modalities to help my patients. How did you end up working at The Royal Treatment Veterinary Center? -I first met Dr. Royal at the Brookfield zoo when I was a veterinary student extern; she would come to do acupuncture on the camels and thought it was fascinating. Once I became a licensed veterinarian, I spent time completing my acupuncture internship hours at The Royal Treatment Veterinary Center. I thought that the clinics philosophy was very similar to how I wanted to practice medicine full time. When a job opening became available I jumped at the opportunity and I have now been working here for a little over a year and a half! What can people expect for the Inflammation Course? -The Inflammation Course will have lots of practical information which attendees can take and put into practice right away - we plan on it being a super fun and informative day! What is your favorite part of your job? -The favorite part of my job is helping to alleviate pets pain. Many pet suffer from debilitating orthopedic conditions such as arthritis live with constant pain. Western medicine is often limited to a few supplements and pain medications, but I can offer these pets so much more, which many times drastically improves the quality of their lives. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them! -I have 2 dogs and they are seriously the best! Louie is an 11 year old maltese mix and Fendi is an 11 year old bichon mix. I adopted both of them when I was in veterinary school. They both have such distinct personalities and keep me laughing all of the time. Be sure to join RAHU and Daniel Orrego for this great course! You can register for the Cancer course online at http://www.royalanimalhealthuniversity.com/. Purchase the Cancer course and the upcoming Inflammation course in July before June 30th to get $100 off! Week 1: During the first week of my internship I had the opportunity to observe multiple doctors and staff members at The Royal Treatment Veterinary Center. Among them were Alex K. during multiple underwater treadmill rehab sessions, Dr. Herndobler performing acupuncture, Pam P. performing a massage, and Dr. Royal throughout her day examining patients. Throughout the week, I was able to observe many cases, however one of the most interesting cases that I observed was a husky that presented with head bobbing and urination which lead to the conclusion that these were signs of cannabis intoxication. Additionally, I picked up several tips about dietary changes that could affect dogs’ overall health that I look forward to implementing on my own dogs. I am eager to see what other clinical skills and holistic practices I will learn along the way!
